If Sophia's "people" are so super smart and able to cause time travel, why do they have such a problem getting "home"?

I know they said in one episode, they would have to wait around for Earth's technology to catch up with them, but if they can control time and space, why don't they just go forward in time and save themselves like, 60 years?

I love how the author of the article says it's a good thing that The Event is not like LOST and yet, it seems to describe why LOST was more effective and superior.
